Calabria is an area of extraordinary beauty, steeped in history, unspoiled, idyllic and one of the best kept secrets in Italy. It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful parts of the country boasting sandy white beaches and turquoise blue waters, perfect year round weather and a relaxed, traditional Italian way of life.
Calabria is a region in Southern Italy which occupies the "toe" of the Italian peninsula south of Naples, it is bounded in the north with Bascilicata, in the west by the Tyrrhenian Sea, and to the east by the Ionian Sea, and is just separated from Sicily by the Messina channel. The region covers 15,080 km2 and has a population of 2 million. The Calabrian coast is famed for its beauty and is home to some of the most stunning beaches with turquoise blue waters. Calabria boasts miles of sandy white beaches adjoining the Ionian Sea and on the “other side of the toe” it has dramatic mountains that plunge into the Tyrrhenian Sea with beautiful ancient villages and gorgeous white sandy cove like beaches. Inland is dominated by the Aspromonte National Park with mountains rising to almost 6,000 feet. Just inland from the coast are ancient hilltop towns with narrow streets that are fabulous to explore and a photographer’s paradise.
For those who know Italy, Calabria is unique - In addition to its dramatic coastlines, array of ancient ruins, stunning beaches, typical Italian Lidos, abundance of sporting activities, Calabria also hosts many feasts and festivals, some of the most flavoursome and spicy food in Italy. Like the food, even the Calabrese people are fiery and warm, yet open and truly welcoming and eager to share the beauty of the region they live in!
For many centuries, Calabria has remained quite isolated from the rest of Italy, as access by road was made difficult due to the presence of mountains and the roads were steep and narrow before the motorway down the west of the region was built to link Calabria with Northern Italy. In the past, this region of Italy has been quite poor with almost no industry at all apart from agriculture. With huge sums of Government money having been poured into Calabria since the War and easier access, Calabria has only recently been “discovered” by tourists, mainly Italians who often choose this area as their holiday home looking for unspoilt beauty.
Italy has always been one of the most desirable, and therefore the most expensive places to buy a holiday home. Until now property in Calabria has not been affected by the booming Italian city markets and intense overseas interest in property. Consequently, if you are looking to buy property in Italy, property in Calabria tends to be much more affordable. Calabria boasts a variety of cheap Italian property for sale and this is NOW an exceptional investment. New roads into this region coupled with low cost flights into the local airport of Lamezia Terme and an enviable rail network linking all of the resorts, are set to change all that, making property in Calabria one of the World’s property hot spots.
The closest airport is Reggio Calabria that can be reached via the Lamezia Terme Airport (situated 135km north from Reggio Calabria). Most people travelling to Calabria fly to Lamezia Term, and flights to Lamezia Terme are increasingly easier to find with the arrival of the budget airline phenomenon, including direct flights with Ryanair. Today Calabria is well connected by air, railways and roads. Some of our Italian properties for sale are just a 25-30 minute drive from Lamezia Terme airport. Hire cars are readily available. Alternatively, some chose to fly to Rome and get a connecting flight to the regions capital Reggio di Calabria.
